"Analyzing Ancient West Mexican Ceramic Figures" by Dr. Robert B. Pickering, The University of Tulsa
Free and open to the public
The powerful and expressive ceramic figures from west Mexico have attracted archaeologists, art historians, and museums for more than a century because of their aesthetics, detailed depictions, and insights into the ancient societies of the region. So too have these figures attracted looters and collectors. In the 1990s Professor Pickering started a program to closely examine these figures in conjunction with his research on human remains from north and west Mexico. As a museum-based scholar, he was also interested in questions concerning the research value of museum collections with minimal contextual data. To address that issue, Pickering uses a forensic perspective coupled with innovative imaging technologies to partially re-contextualize ceramic figures.
